The Habit That Protects Your Rizq

The secret of provision most people forget

Have you ever noticed how quickly money seems to slip away?

Rent
Bills
Food shops
Petrol

Sometimes it feels like as soon as it comes in, it’s already gone

And because of that, many of us cling tighter

We think:

“If I just hold onto what I have, I’ll feel more secure.”

But Islam flips this idea on its head

What if the very thing that makes us feel safe is actually what’s holding our provision back?

Let me take you back

One day, Hasan and Husain ر - the beloved grandsons of the Prophet ﷺ - visited their cousin, Abdullah bin Ja’far ر

They noticed something about him: he was generous

Very generous

In fact, he was spending in a way that seemed, to them, a little too much

So they said to him:

“Cousin, you spend extravagantly!”

Can you imagine being told that?

Most of us would quickly defend ourselves:

“No, I’m careful with my money”
“I only spend when I have to”
“I’m not wasteful”

But Abdullah’s reply was nothing like that

Instead, he gave an answer that revealed the way he saw wealth itself

He said:

“Allah has made me accustomed to His favours, and I have made it a habit to do favours for His slaves. I fear that if I break this habit, provision will be cut off from me.”

Most of us think like this:

spending = losing

But Abdullah thought:

spending = protecting

He didn’t see generosity as draining him

He saw it as keeping the doors of rizq open

Because he knew: when you give for Allah, you’re not really losing anything

You’re just passing it on through your hand

and Allah - The Provider - keeps sending more

The Prophet ﷺ told us clearly:

Charity does not decrease wealth

We often read this hadith and nod

but how deeply do we believe it?

We’re quick to save and slow to give

We measure our security by our bank balance, not by our trust in Allah

But Abdullah flipped the script: his habit of giving became his shield against poverty

Think about it

When was the last time you gave freely -

without hesitation
without calculating
without worrying if it would “hurt your budget”?

It could be £1 in the masjid donation box
A coffee for a friend
Buying your mum something small, just to make her smile
Or even giving your time, your effort, your energy for the sake of others

Every one of those acts is not an expense -

it’s an investment

It’s like planting seeds in soil that never fails to produce fruit

Maybe today, your rizq feels stuck

Maybe you’ve been asking Allah for more but holding back with your giving

Could it be that the door won’t open until you unlock it - with generosity?

So I’ll ask the same questions Abdullah’s life asks us:

  • Have I made giving a habit - something my heart is used to?

  • Or am I clinging so tightly that I’m blocking what Allah wants to give me?

Because the truth is, rizq doesn’t run out when you give

It runs out when you stop

So start today
Give
Share
Spend with trust
Keep the doors of Allah’s provision open

And remember: the hand that gives is the hand that Allah never leaves empty
